Dengue fever is a serious mosquito-borne viral illness that remains a year-round threat in Bali—especially during the wet season from November to April. For tourists and expats, it’s essential to understand the symptoms, prevention, and how to seek care quickly.
What Causes Dengue Fever?
Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which bites during the daytime. There are four types of the dengue virus, and getting infected by one doesn’t protect you from the others.
Symptoms to Watch For
Sudden high fever
Severe muscle and joint pain ("breakbone fever")
Intense headache behind the eyes
Skin rash, usually after a few days
Fatigue and nausea
When It Becomes Dangerous
A small percentage of cases evolve into Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, which includes:
Bleeding gums
Low platelet count
Internal bleeding
Shock and organ failure
Prevention Tips
Use DEET-based mosquito repellent
Wear long sleeves and pants, especially in the morning and afternoon
Sleep with a mosquito net
Avoid stagnant water around your accommodation
What to Do If You're Infected
There is no cure, but early management is critical. Do not take ibuprofen or aspirin, as they increase bleeding risk. Stay hydrated, rest, and contact BaliDoc for immediate consultation and help with lab testing and monitoring.
